Roof sections
Each roof is drawn in the plan as two parallel RAILS — the bearing lines it spans, landing on the double top plate. Everything between the rails and their end points is covered; overhangs are added outside that. Compound roofs come from composition: cross-gable = two sections with perpendicular rails, hip-and-valley = hip main + wing, multi-level = an upper section plus a lower one.
Gable end
The end wall of a roof section — the triangle standing between the top plates and the roof. Skin it like any other exterior face, and mount an attic vent or a light on it. Positions are measured ACROSS the end from rail A, and UP from the top plates.
